Class was dismissed and the kids were told it was time for recess, but Maisie Potter stayed behind. After she was sure everyone was outside, she left the classroom and slipped into the library.

Maisie loved the library. She felt more at home there than anywhere else. She loved the smell that the room seemed to have, not to mention the amount of books to choose from!

She settled on a chapter book called "Matilda" and sat on the floor. She didn't know how long it had been until she heard someone say, "Why aren't you outside?" Maisie jumped and looked up at the boy who asked. She shrugged. "You're Maisie, right?", he asked. Maisie nodded. "I'm Ryan Anderson." "Why are you talking to me?", Maisie asked without thinking. Ryan gave her a confused look. "Aren't you afraid of Dudley and his gang?" Ryan laughed at her. "Not at all. They're all talk. Besides, I'm a fast runner." Maisie smiled a little at that.

A few minutes later, recess was over. Before they left, Ryan turned to Maisie and asked, "Do you want to come over to my house?" Maisie wanted to say "Yes!", but she knew she couldn't.

"I can't, I have a lot of chores to do for my aunt and uncle. I'm sorry." "Oh, it's okay", Ryan said. "But, maybe I could on Saturday?", Maisie asked. Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and Dudley were going to London

for the entire day, and Maisie was going to be left with Mrs. Figg, their neighbor.

"Yeah, I think that would work", Ryan smiled. Maisie smiled back and nodded. "I have to get back to the classroom. See you on Saturday!" "Bye."

Maisie had one thing on her mind for the rest of the day. She made a friend!
