Gus and Hazel were sitting at the park watching the kids play with the Funny Bones.

"Gus," Hazel said, "I-"

Gus shook his head in wonder.

"Funny," he said, "Last time I was the kids playing. Now I'm the bones they are playing on."

"You can't give up this fight," Hazel said.

"Hazel Grace," he said, "I'm so tired. I just want the pain to stop."

Hazel closed her eyes.

"STOP PUSHING ME AWAY," she said.

"I've been thinking about ending-"

"GUS THIS ISN'T YOU," Hazel screamed in fear.

"I'm sorry Hazel Grace," he said, "I just want to go gently."

"Okay," Hazel said grabbing Gus's pocket knife and pointing it to her neck.

"Hazel Grace what are you doing!"

"You're not the only one that's hurting Gus," Hazel said, "I'm hurting too every single day."

"It's too hard," Gus said.

"It's hard for me too," Hazel retorted, "If you go I go."

Gus grabbed the knife but she held onto it.

"You don't know what you're doing," he said.

"No I think this time I'm the one who DOES know what I'm doing," Hazel said.

"There are serious consequences to that," Gus said.

"You're sick," Hazel said, "You made me a promise and I'm not going to let you give up on yourself. I am NOT going to let you suffer more then you already are... just like you're not letting me suffer."

"I just don't know what to do anymore," Gus said.

"You start the new treatments. You hold on. You DON'T push me away because no matter what I WON'T go away."

"Hazel Grace you wouldn't have recognized me that day in the hospital. If anyone is going to suffer it should be me not you."

"It should be neither of us," Hazel said firmly, "I want to show you something. Come on."

Hazel thought she saw a hint of a smile when he raised his eyebrow. They walked a short distance. When Gus got tired she pushed him in his wheelchair.

"Where are we going," he asked her.

"The place you took me the day before we went to Amsterdam," she said.

They finally got to that place.

"It is beautiful," Gus said.

"It is," Hazel replied, "Like you."

"Hazel Grace don't worry. I'll fight this disease. I'll get better."
