Prolog

He kissed me!! He actually KISSED me!!

She only waited for that one day for the cold-hearted man– her cold-hearted man– to finally notice her. Slowly, as her head danced with the image of that special moment, sleep had slowly claimed her...

Her throat. Her throat was...dry. Her mouth. Her mouth tasted like...metal. The smell of pine surrounded her. Where was she? How did she get there? Was she still asleep? She slowly opened her eyes. The sun was out, and she felt the warmth of afternoon on her skin. She sniffed. It smelled metallic. But, what could smell that way in this era?

She licked her dry, chapped lips and, in a flash, shot upright. Her hand whipped to her mouth, wiping anxiously at her lips. She brought her small hand into her vision and her heart began to race.

Red. She jumped to her feet. Her entire mouth tasted like…..blood. She looked at her clothes. They were stained with red as well.

Her eyes darted around, as she looked at her surroundings. She knew this forest; she would sneak here with her friends. She sprinted out of it. The trees zoomed by so fast. Too fast. She felt as if she were flying. She would smile if she weren't so worried. She couldn't have, could she? She couldn't have killed someone and…and…..drank their blood. No. She didn't. No way in hell.

Memories raced through her head. What would she tell them? Her parents? Her friends? No. What would she tell him?

She closed off her mind from it all. She blocked out all those times where she was accepted by them...where they cared for her safety. They would not care for her safety any longer, though. No. She was no longer their priority.

But...where had it all gone so wrong, when she had been swimming in that gene pool? She was supposed to be a werewolf like everyone else; like her mom; like her dad; like her friends; like him. Why was she so different? What went wrong?

Her only option was...to disappear. She would just disappear from them all. It would hurt, she knew. It would hurt her. It would hurt them. It would hurt him. But, she became resolute in her decision. She must protect herself from the pain. It was just her now. Just her. So, all she did was run. All she could ever do from now on is run.

That's what it meant to be a vampire...
