Fire raged through her veins as she slept, her body quickly overheating. Her eyes shot open, and terror struck her. She was glowing orange. Sweat poured down her forehead as the inside of her body felt like it was a thousand degrees, as it easily could have been. "Tony..." Her voice was shaky and broken, almost as if she was gasping for breath. Which she was. Her mouth was drier than the Sahara, and she cried out in pain. How was this happening. It couldn't be. The doctors had cured her. Taken it away. This wasn't supposed to be happening. She reached out next to her, finding the bed empty. He wasn't there. Basement. He was tinkering again. Damn that man. Pepper dragged herself from the bed, sliding partway down the wall as she struggled towards the kitchen. Water. Water put out fires right? She needed a glass of water. Pepper clenched her teeth, holding back a cry of extreme pain. Tony could be asleep downstairs, and she didn't want to wake him. He couldn't know about this. Ever. Odds were he'd find out eventually. But that didn't mean Pepper would have to be the one to tell him.
The water didn't help, and Pepper had slid down against the cool metal of the refrigerator, tears streaming, making her face feel as though someone were dragging a hot poker down her cheeks. She needed Tony. She needed him to pull her close and tell her everything was going to be alright. Even though everything was clearly /not/ alright. Pepper felt truly alone at that point, on the kitchen floor in the middle of the night. She needed Tony.
"Tony! TONY! TONY!" Pepper called out his name over and over again. He never came. What felt like hours passed and he never came. Was she really alone? Had he gone off somewhere without her? Had he gone to a bar or some sort of party, where he was going to hook up with some random woman he wouldn't remember in the morning just like he had for nearly most of the time Pepper had known him?
She didn't have the time to dwell on it.
But she needed Tony.
"TONY!" Pepper was screaming his name now, and when she looked down her entire body was a bright orange-red. She was going to die now. Alone. Just combust. He'd have to rebuild the house again, if he would do it. Pepper was sure he would. He'd move on with his life. No regrets? Wasn't that it?
'You're all I have left too, you know.'
Her heart broke as she remembered those words that had brought such a sadness to his eyes.
And that was the last thing she remembered. Screaming his name before she became a human bomb.
"TONY!"
The ginger's eyes shot open and she lay shaking in their bed. She was alive. Breathing. Cool. No heat. /She was alive/. "Tony?" Pepper's voice was weak and terrified. She couldn't even reach out to search for him. "Tony..." Her entire body was covered in sweat, and tears streamed down her cheeks as she lay there shaking.
Dun-dun-dun! I hope you like it so far! Please review! Oh! And if you ever need any really good Tony/Pepper one-shots and/or some bloody good writing, check out Teddy R. Lupin's stories. They're brilliant!
This is Potts, signing out.
