Man, this was tough to write. I hope you enjoy it. (Probably not the best word choice.) I did get the idea from Of Mice and Men. So yeah. Please as review afterwards. Seeing as this is my first fanfic, I'd like to know what you think.

Disclaimer: I own neither Shingeki No Kyojin, or Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I am receiving no financial compensation for writing this story.

He points vaguely, at a point some distance from them.

"Look over there. Across the river."

Eren squints through the murky darkness and mist. "I don't see anything."

Levi's blade slides silently from it's sheath. "Keep looking brat. You'll see it any second."

Eren shrugs, but obeys his captain. He continues to squint away from Levi, and away from his fate.

The notice had arrived at the Survey Corps barracks that morning, a simple one page letter. The Military Police were out for blood; Eren Jaeger was under arrest, to be executed immediately. Hangi gasped in horror. Levi had crumpled the damning form into a tight ball before heaving it across the room. Erwin silently rose from his chair and stalked from the room. Levi saw him leave the barracks through the window. He and Hangi spend the rest of the day waiting and worrying.

Erwin returned late in the afternoon. Levi looked at him expectantly. All the answer he got was a solemn shake of the head. It was all the answer he needed. Eren's fate was well and truly sealed.

He knew the MPs wouldn't spare him any pain. They would draw out the... Procedure as long as possible. Make Eren suffer as much as they could. It was this thought that propelled his feet into the dining hall, that set his hand on Eren's shoulder.

"Eat quickly, Brat. You've got a night patrol with me."

Eren had groaned and Mikasa had argued, then tried to wheedle her way into coming along, but he had none of it, and dismissed her objections with a glare.

He is sure she has figured out by now that they weren't on an ordinary patrol. He briefly wonders what she'll do to him, but quickly shakes the thought and focusses on the matter at hand.

The blade rises and steadies itself in position.

"Sir I don't see anything. What am I looking for?"

"Trust me, Jaeger. You'll see it any time now."

It will be over in less than a second. He is humanity's strongest, and he does not miss.

"Captain..."

"Eren. Didn't I just tell you to trust me?"

His shoulders sag slightly, but he nods and does not turn back.

The blade descends, a shining arch of deadly silver.
