"You're really sure you want to do this? There are...other things in life than being a viper pilot."
"Lee?"
"Just...think about it." Without another word Lee had driven off with his motorcycle to War College again.
Zak stared until his brother was out of sight. Slightly confused he went back inside the house.
Hours later, Lee's question still echoed through Zak's mind and touched his innermost core. He tossed the application form onto his bed.Tentatively he reached over to the picture on his nightstand and touched it. It showed Dad, Lee and himself in front of Dad's viper. Sure? How could Lee even doubt it? Zak had wanted to wear the uniform ever since that day. If he closed his eyes he could still remember every detail of that moment the picture was taken: the sight, the smell, just everything. He had been so proud, felt so alive and...connected to them both.
It seemed like only yesterday that Lee and him had run down the streets or played hide and seek in a forest, pretending to be Colonial warriors and saving mankind from Cylons. And the two of them had vowed on an overnight trip to one day do it - the two of them together, flying in their Vipers and destroying the Cylons for good. They'd be heroes.
Zak chuckled. Children. He still remembered Lee's vehement statement. "And everything will be alright then. Dad'll be proud and stay home with us, we'll be a family again and when we need money, the three of us simply fly a few missions together."
It wasn't that he doubted his brother, but probably Lee should have questioned his own motivations instead of his. At least back the time they vowed - or now. Zak shook his head. His brother knew what he was doing; he always had. As did he himself.
The people he had met when visiting Lee at the training compound seemed to be so different from those guys with planetside jobs. Pilots just had that ...that special flair.
Three days ago, when Lee had been out of town with some school time friends, he had tried on Lee's uniform. Only thing missing were original dog tags, as Lee always wore his. Zak had compensated by wearing those he had gotten at the Air and Space museum when he had been twelve.
The uniform didn't fit him perfectly - Lee was slightly different in built - but otherwise it had looked so damned right. He knew without doubt, that he belonged into a uniform. Just like Dad, just like Lee.
Lords, he was so proud of Lee. And Zak knew one thing. He'd make his brother proud of him as well.
