Today

Author's Note: Hi! This is a one-shot fic written in ten minutes... I don't think it's polished, but I really liked the concept. Hope you like it.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything. Everything belongs to Harper Lee.

They were all shouting about a mad dog coming down the road.

Papa told me lots 'bout them mad animals. He says it'd be madness to go near them without a gun. Papa tells me lots of things. That is, when he ain't raving mad and drunk.

I duck off the road onto the gravel, where the other people were, talking and whispering rea loudly. I could hear Crawford fretting real stupidly and flapping her hands like a mad chicken, so I turn away to look at the dog.

Aye, it was a mad one, and I wondered who'd be the one to take it out.

I saw the group of men, saw them clear away just as Heck Tate literally threw the gun into Atticus Finch's arms.

Now I was interested. Papa had told me this man was near blind and real useless to boot, but nobody ever told me he could shoot. I pushed my way to the front. I don't hear any protest, but I feel their disapproval. White trash. That was what they called us. I am thirteen and no one tells me nothing, but I'm not stupid.

I saw Finch raise the weapon, saw him aim slowly but like a real hunter. Interesting.

Bang. I saw the mad dog fall to its side, and I heard the cheer of the people around me. I did not cheer with them. I felt worried.

Today, I saw that mad dog fall to a single bullet from the hand of this man who was going against my papa.

Today, I saw that One Shot Finch and the lawyer manifested in the same body.

Today, I saw the man who could take my daddy and my sister out in court.

Today, I saw Atticus Finch.

Today, I saw a real dangerous man.
