When they told him to choose one of the Greengrass sisters, he chose Astoria.
The reasons were glaringly obvious, and sometimes, he would sit in the empty house with his trusty Firewhiskey in hand (and his bitter memories) and think. He liked to believe he enjoyed those lonely nights, when alcohol numbed the pain and the throbbing in his head prevented him from remembering.
Firstly, she was a Ravenclaw, and he thought (quite naïvely, he now thinks) that should mean they would at least share some intelligent conversations in the future together.
And she was quiet; much quieter than her sister, anyway. He flat-out refused when his mother suggested Daphne. Not on his life would he ever agree to be in the same room with his former housemate (something unavoidable for his 7 school years), much less 'till death do us part' with her.
Thankfully, his epiphany was semi-correct, and he and Astoria share lovely conversations during dinner parties.
Conversations that remind him of her. Of them.
Conversations that stop abruptly when they are out of the public eye.
Conversations that turn into snide remarks and biting comments.
He loved getting her all riled up.
But she wasn't her. (And that was the difference, he now understands.)
But the biggest reason was the fact that Astoria had someone who loved her- someone who would give away his life for her.
And that was why he was going to marry Astoria Greengrass.
Because he's going to take away somebody's love the way the Weasel took away his.
