Hey Everyone...

This is the 1st fanfic ever written for the Abarat Series. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: A Lucky Break

"You know, Candy, people have been saying things that they shouldn't, especially around you." said Malingo, as he and Candy hurried down the pier at Orlando's Cap, looking back over his shoulder at the insane little man that was standing behind them. They had been looking around all the islands of the Abarat, and their recent stop at Orlando's Cap, at 2 O'clock in the afternoon, was slightly unnerving.

"Malingo I'm not doing anything, if you haven't noticed." said Candy, as they hopped into the ferry that brought them to the Yebba (a.k.a. the Yebba Dim Day). "People act weird around me." The little red boat (all boats in the Sea of Izabella are painted red: the evil fish hate the colour) chugged off towards the misty shape of the giant head of 8 O'clock in the evening, the Yebba Dim Day.

"Y'ar off atta Yebba?" Asked the first mate, an older man with yellow skin and receding black hair.

"Yes, Dalamar. Please." said Malingo, his tone one of surprising confidence, for one who had only been a free man for a few weeks. Candy had freed Malingo from the clutches of an evil, fat, deranged wizard on Ninnyhammer, at 10 O'clock. Malingo used to be a slave.

As they watched the skies darken as the ship passed between the hours, Malingo slipped his warm, tough orange hand into Candy's pale, soft one.

"I never want this to go away." he said, looking at the stars.

"Me neither." Candy whispered. "You're my best friend."

Soon the boat pulled into the polluted harbour of the Yebba and Candy and Malingo hopped out. Candy pushed 3 paterzem into Dalamar's hand and her and the geshrat were consumed by the crowd.

Knock, knock, knock

"Klepp!!!" yelled Candy

"Samuel Klepp are you there???!!!!!!!" she and Malingo were standing outside the door to Samuel Hastrim Klepp IIIII's office, and printing press for the revered Klepp's Almenak.

Candy was just about to knock again, when the door swung open and Samuel was standing there, same as months ago when Candy had met him for the first time in the Abarat.

"Ahh. Candy. Welcome back." he said, gesturing them into his supremely messy office. Years of copies of the Almenak were stacked everywhere.

"Sam, this is Malingo." said Candy, and the geshrat and Klepp shook hands warmly. "Hi, Mr. Klepp." said Malingo

"Just call me Sam. Or Sammy. Welcome to my home, kids. Sorry if it's messy. Make yourself at home."

"Thanks Mr. Klepp" Malingo smiled and sat down on the floor (there was no room on the chairs: they were covered in papers)

"So, why are you two vagabonds here?" asked Klepp.
