Crazy Science
Beep. Beep. Beep. Drip. Drip. Drip. Hiss. Hiss. Hiss. Sob. Wail. Bawl. Scream. The sounds of a hospital. The beeping of her heart monitors, the dripping of her fluids, the hissing of her breathing mask, the sobbing of her lover, wailing, bawling, screaming for the doctors to do something. If they could create her, why couldn't they heal her? Why was she dying in the French immunologist's arms? But they wouldn't. She wasn't their problem. Not their problem. Delphine refused to go to Leekie. He did not own Cosima, whatever her biology said. No. As she cradled the evolutionary development scientist in her arms, she whispered broken comforts in French, tears streaking down her face. But Cosima's chocolate eyes smiled back at her, face pale, body skinny. She hung on to life for Delphine because it was love, pure and simple. They could not let go.
"D-Delphi?" A weak voice, soft and weary escaped from the oxygen mask.
"Oui, moi cheri?" French, lilting accent, forcibly strong for the other.
"M'scared. D-don't wanna leave you."
"Oh, my sweet, you should not worry about that. I am here. I love you."
"Love you." They lapse back into silence for a while, listening to the comforting, constant beeping.
"You know w-what?"
"What, Cosima, my love?"
"You're my crazy science.
