Katherine sat down next to Jack. "Hey."
He let out a mumble in response. The two were sitting on the rooftop, enjoying the sunset. Jack's painting supplies sat in the corner. Katherine slid her hand into Jack's. The strike had ended months ago and everyone was settling back down.
"What're you working on?" she asked.
"A painting." Katherine looked to the corner. Jack's paints were open, waiting to be used.
The girl got up and went to where the jar of red paint was sitting. She grabbed a paintbrush and carefully dipped it in the paint.
When she reached her boyfriend, she painted a thick line of the red paint across his forehead.
He turned to her. "Oh, you is goin' to pay for that Plumber!" He stood up, using his thumb to take a drop of it off his forehead and smeared it down her nose.
"Oh really, Mr. Kelly?" She watched as he backed up, and grabbed a jar of blue paint and a paintbrush.
"Yeah." He slowly walked toward her.
Her eyes grew large. "Jack, please don-!" she was cut off as Jack grabbed her and smeared paint across her cheek.
"Now we's even."
Katherine smirked. "Not yet."
"Kath, what da ya mean?"
As he finished his sentence, Katherine slammed a paintbrush full of paint along his cheek. It was dripping on his clothes, and he fired back.
The hour that ensued was a paint-filled one. Katherine had started a paint war between the couple. They finally ran out of paint.
Katherine looked at Jack. He had paint on every inch of his face, on his clothes, and it was matting his hair together.
Katherine looked the same. "Come on, let's go back to the lodging house and get cleaned up."
"Not so fast." Jack said.
"What?"
Jack pulled Katherine into a kiss.
She smiled when they separated. "Now, let's go."
"Whoa! What's happened to you'se guys?" exclaimed a startled Romeo when the door of the lodging house opened to reveal the paint-covered couple.
"We had a paint war. Let us in."
