"I'll ship your balls to her apartment, shall I?" A vase flew past Ron Weasley's shoulder. He ducked beneath a jet of flames, sliding through the door with the tips of his hair scorched. Before the door clicked shut, he heard one last threat. "I'll send Lavender the instructions on how to reattach them. I expect she'll be quite confused, there's not much to reattach them to!"
Hermione let out a scream of hurt and frustration, before collapsing in the middle of the floor in her flat. She curled up into a ball, strangely cold, and stayed there.
She was in the same exact position when Severus found her three hours later. Her eyes had long since run out of tears to shed and appeared quite vacant. She scarcely even blinked when he approached her. Severus gathered her into his arms and carried her over to the sofa. The second he sat down, she curled into him, hanging on for dear life. Severus stayed with her like that for a while, hours perhaps? Neither could be sure. Hermione eventually broke the silence.
"You were right." Her voice was hoarse from crying, the words barely discernible. He tightened his arms around her, pulling her closer.
He hadn't wanted to be right. He had very much hoped that he would be wrong. He had long since stopped being bothered by Hermione not being with him, only wishing for her to be happy. He didn't tell her about what he saw Ron and Lavender doing to try and break them up, but because she needed to know. Severus didn't want to see her hurting. But she was. And he could do nothing but watch.
He knew the hour was growing late, and stood up with her still in his arms. Walking down the hallway, the second door on the right swung open for him. Levitating the covers back, he tucked her into bed. He brushed her hair behind her ear before turning to leave. Closing the door behind him, he knew that no matter what happened, he would always be there for her.
He would never abandon her.
