A/N: This is my first fanfiction :) Please read and review, I would really appreciate it.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters nor the song Lover is Childlike by The Low Anthem.
Meet me down by the whale watch
Meet me down by the sea
He watches her as they lay on the beach. Her eyes are closed and she actually looks calm. It's been two months since she has had to face the Games herself. All victors come out different, mentally or physically, after being traumatized by the terrifying deaths, mutts, and killers. Not to mention the nightmares that even Finnick still has. But no one suffers more than Annie.
Meet me down at Coney Island
We'll go out on the sea
She wasn't like himself, who chose to personally kill the other tributes. Annie ran and hid and she won that easily. But here she is, not the same kind hearted and calm girl he mentored only a few months ago. It wasn't her fault what happened. After witnessing her fellow tribute's beheading, she lost it. The earthquake and flood to follow saved her when she out swam the others. She won, but she could care less.
But then again, they couldn't be more alike. Besides the fact that they're both from District 4 and love the sea, they've experienced The Hunger Games. Something that scarred them both, her probably more than any other victor he's met, including himself.
She don't ask me no questions
'Cause I don't cry no wolf
They never talk. Yet. They're just there for eachother. Mostly just lying on the sand at the beach, a place where no one from the capital can find either of them.
He wonders why he's always by her these days. Maybe to protect her, or maybe just to understand her. But he finally gets that it's because she's the only one who's been in the same mess as him. Besides Mags, Annie Cresta is the only one who really understands. And like Mags had comforted him after his games, Finnick feels as though he needs to do the same.
By the ruins of the ferris wheel
See her down in the surf
You might think she's Christ-like
But my lover is childlike
Everyone says she's crazy. Finnick knows she not. She's just different... almost childlike. It's not her fault. Annie was never like this. He knows she'll get better eventually. He'll just wait.
See the fish swimmin' upstream
Back to the hills
Want no part in the whale watch
If you couldn't tell
And now the capital continues to torment children and their families every year. And they're sitting here as if they can't do anything, as if those capital freaks are untouchable. One day they'll pay. For what they did to Annie, and everyone else who had to suffer.
My lover ain't Christ-like
But my lover is childlike
For now, they'll have to go one step at a time. Before fixing the lives of others, he has to take care of Annie first. Then together they can stop the capital.
She don't care for country
In her tatters and rags
As the band plays the anthem
She whispers, "God hates flags"
Annie lifts her head off the sand and glances at him. She gives a sad smile and he knows that they're one step closer to understanding each other.
