A/N: This story was inspired by a set of songs, though it is not a song fic per se. Each chapter will begin with a quote from one of the songs; the song will be credited at the end of the chapter. This is not non-massacre, but Sasuke never left to go with Orochimaru.
Warning: This will be a sometime angsty, sometime fluffy, sometimes pervy, most times cliché little piece of Kakasaku fanfiction. It is not intended for underage consumption, and I will not be held responsible for offending virgin ears.
Also, I do not own Naruto or any of its characters, nor do I profit from this story.
Prologue
I never thought I'd end up here
Never thought I'd be standing where I am
Sakura glared down at her clenched fist and the navy blue fabric trapped there. She wanted to scream. She wanted to yank at that fabric and shake it back and forth until it ripped and the man it covered lay bare at her feet.
How did she get here? What was she doing, standing over her former teacher in the middle of a training field in the rain, gripping his shirt so tightly that her knuckles turned white?
"Goddammit, Kakashi …" she ground out.
There was more that she wanted to say, of course—What's wrong with you? What's wrong with me? Why can't you see what's right in front of your fucking face?!—but when she looked into his eyes, he seemed at once so confused and so detached, as if he couldn't understand why she was so mad but hadn't quite decided if he cared in the first place, that her anger just slid away, a sort of sardonically hopeless weariness taking its place. She should have known.
"Fuck it," she sighed and pushed him to the ground, the last vestiges of her temper taking bitter pleasure in the squelching sound he made when his body hit the mud. Without allowing herself to spare even one last look down, she stepped over him.
When she reached the edge of the field, she turned her face to the sky for a moment, closing her eyes and letting the rain cleanse her cheeks of the tears of frustration she had been unable to prevent.
And then she walked away.
For a long time afterward, Kakashi lay there in the mud, blinking as rainwater dripped into his eyes, watching the gray clouds slide across the sky.
