I originally wrote this as a para prompt for a Roleplay and after three years decided that I could probably pass it as a decent short fanfiction.
Trigger Warning: Still birth
~ Before Draco ~
Red little lips. Lashes too long to be those of a babe's. Blonde hair, like her mother's but with a curl sembling her aunt's. She was perfect…
A tear rolled down Narcissa's cheek as she gazed upon her new born daughter, curled snuggly in her arms. Why did she have to be taken away so quickly?
She bent her head and kissed the girl's golden locks, "You are perfect… So- so perfect." The words came out a choked whisper.
Two years… Two years of constantly trying and failing and now, finally she was expecting - a little girl. Both Narcissa and Lucius were on cloud nine. But of course, something had to go wrong and the little girl was a stillborn. Narcissa felt her heart break the moment she was told. She knew something was wrong - a mother always knew- but she could never have guessed it would be this.
Lyra… They named her Lyra because the name sounded angelic, like their little girl was. She was a beautiful song that would never be heard.
"At least you will never have to know the dark." she choked out. "You will be a little angel, watching over us." Narcissa's words caught in her throat, the pain in her chest growing to unbearable. She would never know her daughter. Never go dress shopping. Never know her laugh or her smile. The colour of the girl's eyes, a mystery for they had never opened.
"They have to go." Lucius was looking at Lyra, not taking his eyes of her as he softly spoke to his wife.
"No." Narcissa whispered, clutching the girl closer to her chest, "Just a few more minutes… Please." Her tears were running faster now and one fell on the baby's cheek. Narcissa wiped it softly with her thumb - skin so soft.
A minute felt like seconds as the healer came for the babe. Narcissa refused to let go but Lucius finally managed to pull his wife away. She collapsed, clutching his robes as she sobbed into his chest.
How could they take her away? Her little girl. She was her's they didn't have the right to take her. Why did they not understand? Why did they force her to let go? She didn't want to let go! She made a promise to her unborne. She promised she would always be there, protecting her against anything harmful and now they made her break the promise before the child even had time to live.
She cried for the loss of a loved one. She cried for another failure. She cried because Lyra was her only light in a time filled with darkness… And most of all, she cried because part of her died that night along with her baby.
