She stepped out on to the balcony of the elephant look past the great crimson windmill to the small little flat beyond. Christian's light was on. He was still clinging on to the hope of the night before that the two of them could run away. Away from Paris….away from the Moulin Rouge.
What a wonderful hope that had been. To run away with her penniless write. But that dream was shattered by the truth….the fact that she was dying. That poisonous venom of consumption was running through her veins and there was nothing anyone could do.
But that fate seemed far less painful then what she was about to do. She was about to tell the one thing she loved more than anything, the most wonderful and beautiful thing in her life……that she didn't love him. Satine knew she had to do it…..it was the only way she could save him…..even if it meant sacrificing herself to do it.
She began to singing in a whisper letting all the sorrows in her heart come crying out.
Where do we go from here?
This isn't where we intended to be
We had it all, you believed in me
I believed in you
She looked again to Christian's window hoping he could hear the hushed whisper of her song. That he would reply back.
Certainties disappear
What do we do for our dream to survive?
How do we keep all our passions alive,
As we used to do?
Deep in my heart I'm concealing
Things that I'm longing to say
Scared to confess what I'm feeling
Frightened you'll slip away…..
There was nothing. No response from her beloved angel. He did not hear her song of pure agony. Hot tears streamed down Satines cheeks. He legs gave out from under her and she collapsed on the floor.
Though the tears she sang out in a muffled cry……
You must love me.
