The Hat on the Door
No one really had a definition for its existence. No one could figure why he hid himself! It always sat there, shadowing most of his expressions. It didn't make sense! But what did they care? It wasn't their place to talk about it! It was nothing anyway. Apparently it didn't mean anything, so no one asked. No one was really sure what they would get if they asked anyway. Perhaps he wouldn't answer? That would cause more questions. And unasked questions were what started the 'unspoken' agreement in the first place. How can the most trivial things convey the most meaning? How can the important things be left behind? Or maybe it was important. They didn't have a reason, other then curiosity. They finally opened up, and passed the unspoken agreement. It was now spoken, and generally discussed.
It still didn't make any sense, and they were yet to overcome their 'unasked questions'. After another night of pointless musing, it was all lost again. It had slipped back into silence. Only to be brought back up again when he was found sleeping with it. It had to be important now! Or, were they looking for something in a pointless place? Had their lives really started to become so boring, they decided to talk about this? They had to move on, and get over pointless things. But woe unto them! The more such a trivial thing was ignored, the more they whispered, the more they conveyed with unspoken words. It was so pointless, but it captured all of their attention.
They decided 'unasked' should become 'asked'. But not to him. Oh no, that would be foolish! They were avoiding scandal, but keeping it unasked to him. That was the important part, unless they were making it all up. Creating scandal to fill their lives. But that sounded degrading, so they waited. When the one person came around they thought they could ask, their thoughts turned blank. When they asked, it was met with the most amused glances. And she thought they were strange? She was the one who spoke with him!
Despite indecisiveness, she managed to give them an answer. Though, their scandalous thought reemerged when Tessai wasn't bothered.
After all, what wasn't suspicious about a hat being nailed to a locked door?
