Sins of the General: Lazy and Vain
He is both lazy and vain, but that is fine:
he shines, he wins, he leads, and that's all
good in life
But then those gnats appear, chewing, scratching,
always there and never leaving him alone
no matter how he swats, because he doesn't swat
hard enough
So he will. He'll fight harder. He does
but he's rusty. His pride cracks. His white stones
are dull and he's angry. He casts aside his vanity
and sloth, and even his body, until only
his foolish head remains, to lament.
