"Wasn't it Doctor Agasa who entrusted him to us?" Kogoro asked Ran as Conan panicked in the over-sized office chair. Ran nodded. Kogoro glanced at the boy. "Then we should at least ask him for their phone number."

"Y-You can't do that!" Conan shouted at Kogoro. It was just after Christmas, the snow falling heavily outside the window. As usual, Kogoro and Ran were asking more questions about his parents than he had answers to. The doorbell rang and Ran moved to answer it but Kogoro leaned into and spoke in a low voice to Conan.

"What? Would it be bad if we called your parents?" He asked. Kogoro was no idiot. It was unusual for a child to be abandoned with strangers. For parent to never call, to never ask about his well-being bespoke a sad home. Not only that, but for a child to be so unfazed by crime scenes, never moved by blood or violence... Kogoro didn't like to think too long about it. Conan never spoke of his home or his parents and the reason for that, as far as Kogoro could reason, could only be heartbreaking to know.

Conan didn't answer before Ran called out to them from the doorway, where a smiling woman stood.

*Author's Note: Episode 43, wherein Conan is "kidnapped" by a woman claiming to be his mother. The dialogue is a direct transcription from the episode. A quiet example for the keen ear to see that Kogoro does indeed look after Conan like his own. :-)
