OK. a/n: This is what I wanted to have happened on 12/1/02's episode of Alias. Vaughn goes on the mission with Sydney, Jack and Irina, and observes the conversation on the airplane and other scenes. Vaughn POV, multiple POV's later.

*********************

Syd had convinced her mother to take them to the nuclear warheads. I don't know how she did it, but here we are, sitting on this plane. Syd and her "family" are sitting way across, on the other side of the cargo hold. While I'm pretending to ready my parachute, I am far enough away that I can't hear their conversation, but close enough to eavesdrop if I really want to.

I glance in Sydney's direction and she seems to be at unrest. This thing with her parents is really taking its toll on her.

Irina turns her head and looks at my general direction. She looks like she is trying to look beyond me, but I can tell she is observing my every move. She speaks to Sydney, who seems a little like she was punched in the stomach. She recovers quickly, and I only see the slightest bit of nervousness in her movements when she replies.

I think I made myself a touchy subject to Syd. I made her uncomfortable when I told her about my father's watch stopping the day we met. God I'm stupid. Who ever invented the beeper should be shot, by the way.

Irina says something to Sydney and Jack butts it. You can almost see the contempt he has for his former wife ooze out of his very skin. He is yelling, but I can barely hear him over the plane engine's roar. Although, he is still audible.

"You have no right to give her advice about relationships!" he yelled, infuriated at Irina's previous statement, which I didn't hear. I instictively know, on some level, that it is me they are are talking about, so I turn my back and pretend not to hear the scene playing out behind my back.

I hear Syd's yells to keep them quiet, like a mother to her bickering children. If the situation hadn't been so serious, it would have been funny. To me, at least. I would have laughed.

Sydney seems to have silenced them, so I guess I can turn around now. I turn, only to find her staring at me. I nonchalantly look away, but I can feel her stare, a gaze so full of sadness that it pierces my soul. Oh, how I want to turn around and run to her, screaming "Screw protocol!" at the top of my lungs, and hold her and love her untill our worlds come crashing down. I would give twenty year for that one perfect moment. Even with her father here, it takes more self- control than I ever thought I had.

I turn and meet her gaze with a smile. To my relief, she smiles back, but it is a sad smile, laced with fear and sadness for things that can never be.

Irina sees.
