Kissing the Sunlight

Cornelia sat down beside Drake, not speaking, but leaning her head against his strong shoulder and closing her eyes.

"Caleb still with Will?"

"Hasn't left her side."

Maybe Drake wasn't very in-tune with girl's emotions, but the blonde didn't seem to upset over that.

"Is she any better?"

"She's stable. She'll probably wake up soon and see Caleb and her eyes will cloud up and they'll profess their love, and it'll be just like a fairy tale. Ugh, gag me, to sappy."

"You don't like fairy tales?"

He feels her cheeks pull into a smile.

"What gave me away?"

they sat in silence for a while and Drake wondered if she knows. She was very aware of the way she looked, so she must know that even when it was Phobos and Nerissa they were fighting, he had his eyes on her. But she was Caleb's girl, so he took a step back. But as the enemies got stronger and they spent more and more time fighting together... well, she was more than just stunning. She was confident and strong and noble despite her flaws, and reminding himself that she had a boyfriend, his best friend, his leader, got harder.

"Besides," she muttered, "in fairy-tales, Princesses don't get to fall in love with the knight in shinning armor. They have to fall for a prince."

"What's wrong with that?"

"My prince dumped me for another girl."

"Oh. That."

"But that's why I don't need a fairy-tale. I have a knight, and I'm a princess, right?"

"You certainly act like one."

"Exactly."

Another moment of comfortable silence.

"So this knight of yours..."

she punched him lightly in the arm.

"Don't be dumb, it's you."

"Ah."

"Ah?"

instead of responding to her, he turns his head, lifts her chin, and kisses her lightly, then returns to his previous position. She huddles closer to him.

"Yeah," he agrees, "Fairy-tales are crap."
