It was mid-morning and Jessie gave a small sigh of exasperation as Buzz was still asleep. Bonnie's family was on vacation, so the toys had the run of the house. She knew that he was the last of the toys to go to sleep, even when Bonnie was gone; it was the protective side of him and she loved that. It also meant that he was the last to wake up, which was normally all right, but with Bonnie gone, there were days to be filled with activity while they all had the freedom to do so.
Jessie sat cross-legged on the bed as she watched Buzz's plastic chest rise and fall with each soft breath. He lay on his back, his left arm along his side, and his right rested near his head. The purple and white fingers curled in towards his palm and his face was a study in serenity. If Jessie had her way, it would not be that way for long.
She crawled over to his left side and whispered loudly, "Buzz!". There was no response and Jessie pouted before her face lit up with a mischievous grin. Bonnie's room was empty but for the couple, so she bent over, kissing his cheek softly. Still no response; it appeared to her that it was going to be a challenge to wake up her Space Ranger. The battle was on and Jessie was delighted to fight dirty.
She carefully lay down on top of him, secretly hoping he would not wake up just yet. Clasping her hands on the neck of his spacesuit, she leaned in, nuzzling her nose against his cheek. Nothing. No stirring, no eyelid cracking open. She pressed her lips lightly to his cheek, to his chin, to the purple nub on the side of his head. The fight was getting old; after all, the whole purpose was to get a reaction. Jessie's eyes narrowed; it was time to pull out the big guns. She tilted her head to her left so she could plant a soft, slow kiss on Buzz's lips. This just had to work.
She pulled back and… Buzz's soft, even breaths remained constant. Jessie exhaled loudly in frustration; it was not fair that nothing she tried had worked. And then she saw it. The corner of his lips twitched ever so slightly at her disgruntled sigh. She laughed and lightly slapped Buzz's chest, "You are awake!"
The Space Ranger laughed and caught Jessie about the waist, rolling over onto the bed. His blue eyes were warm as he grinned down at her. She returned the grin, "You varmint. How come you didn't get up the first time?"
"And ruin the fun?" He reached up, pulling Jessie's hat from under her head. He leaned in and softened the offense with a sweet, lingering kiss. "Now that you've got me up, what do you want to do today? We could sneak outside and sit under the tree, play a game, watch TV, read a book, or," he shifted so he was laying beside her, his arms still around her waist. "We could just enjoy the solitude and go back to sleep."
Jessie snuggled in even closer to him, "That sounds good to me. But this time, you can wake me up."
Buzz grinned as he rested his head on hers. "Challenge accepted," he whispered, closing his eyes.
