Mana smiles brightly at him.

"Hap—"

"Shiba!"

A feeling of humiliation sweeps over Isshin as he flushes furiously and berates himself for—once again—daydreaming about his mind-breaker.

"Oh, uh, good morning, Nakaura-sensei!"

"Is something wrong, Shiba?" he inquires, and Isshin shakes his head furiously, still berating himself.

"Well then. Happy birthday, Shiba."

"What? Oh, thank you, sir." Silence. "Er… How… did you know?"

"January 18. It was in your school records."

"Oh."

More silence.

"Well… I'll see you around, Shiba."

"Yes, Nakaura-sensei."

And Tomonori walks away, only stopping to throw Shiba a box and smile over his shoulder.

Shiba catches both.
