"How about we make a bet?"
The idiot was at it again. I glared at him over a chocolate bar as he counted a stack of bills.
"I'll give you two grand if you can get in her pants tonight."
"Scarlet's not one of your mindless sluts, Rod," I replied flatly. "I've told you this time and time again: that would take more than one day."
"Have you two kissed yet?"
"No."
"Then let's make that the bet."
I sighed, but knew my competitive nature was already starting to get the better of me.
"When I win, will that shut you up?"
He grinned, dropping the money on the table.
"That's the spirit. You matching my wager?"
"Three grand." His brows shot up, grin widening.
"Damn, Mello, you better get that kiss!"
I smirked cockily.
"It's one kiss. As long as she doesn't know about the bet, it'll be easy."
A wad of bills sailed over my head and landed with a decisive plop in the middle of the table. Breaking off a piece of chocolate, I craned my neck to look up at a familiar confident grin.
"Four thousand," Scarlet challenged. I chuckled.
"Well, this just got interesting."
"See you tomorrow, Mello. Have my share ready," she sang, and proceeded to walk away, but I caught her arm.
"I don't think so."
"Sure you don't," she retorted without losing her fake innocent demeanor. "Good luck getting your three grand back." She pulled away and vanished through the doorway. Rod burst out laughing. Shaking my head, I finished my chocolate bar and stood up to follow after her, running a list of her favorite hiding spots through my head. This could take a while…
"Haha… Um, Mello, I kind of need to…uh…" She fidgeted nervously, pressed against the wall as far as she could go. I leaned over her with the condescending smirk that I knew ticked her off, expectant of victory that we both knew was coming.
"What happened to 'Have my share ready,' Scarlet?" I asked antagonistically.
"I didn't expect you to be lurking around the corner to the women's locker room, damn it!"
"That was the point," I told her obviously. "And now, I'll be earning my six thousand dollars."
I tipped her madly blushing face up towards mine and started to close the distance. She hesitated, and then…
"Tag, you're it!"
A stinging pain shot through my shin, knocking me off balance for a moment. In that moment, she sprinted her way down the hall while I swore loudly, clutching the leg she'd kicked. Part of me suggested going for my gun, but then something small bounced off the top of my head. Glancing around in confusion for what had hit me, I noticed something small and shiny on the floor and picked it up. A foil-wrapped chocolate kiss glistened in the dim light, and a small handwritten note came into my view. I turned it over to read it.
You owe me big time, idiot.
A small sound reverted my attention to the end of the hallway, where Scarlet stood timidly just within safe distance of a corner. She stuck her tongue out at me childishly and dashed away. I laughed.
Rod was going to be pissed when he heard this one.
