My first Strifentine, hope you like it :)

He could always hear the gentle whispers emitted from his lover every night as the blonde had thought he was in a deep slumber. It was just Cloud to be naïve in such situations.

He should know better by now- Vincent barely ever sleeps anymore, but instead he waits until the older man's breathing is evened out and begins a speech that could only come from the very depths of his troubled heart.

It hurt Vincent to hear such things every night, but he couldn't let the cute innocent blonde know that he has heard every bit of his suffering, that would only give him more to think about and Vincent couldn't do that to Cloud. Not after all he's been through.

He longs to aid Cloud on his personal journey to understand himself, he wants to make him feel better, but most of all, he just wants to see the boy smile again.

These thoughts were of course left behind secret doors in Vincent's mind, longing and begging for freedom, but he can't do that to Cloud. Perhaps the blonde would no longer confess his pain at night anymore if he knew he was heard. The words were meant for unconscious ears.

All of Vincent's thoughts are brought to an abrupt halt now, however, as Cloud's gentle whispers echo in his ears yet again.

"You beautiful creature. You'll never know the extent of my feelings. Hell, I don't even know them myself. You've captured my heart, Vincent, in so many different ways…but I'm so confused! I'm a terrible person. I've let two of my best friends die in front of me, not even bothering to help them. How could I do that? How could you love me after such terrible things? How could you love me period? I'm a deep sinner, an enigmatic bastard. You've put up with so much from me; I want to know how you manage. I'm so tired, Vincent. Tired of being confused. Tired of living this way. Will anything ever end, or is everything eternal?"

Vincent's heart clenched as Cloud ended his final sentence. He had a feeling that this time, Cloud had known he was heard. Neither of them spoke a word though, but once Vincent knew for sure that the blonde had fallen asleep, he turned from his position and held the small man in his arms, softly placing a loving kiss to his forehead.

"Nothing is eternal, Cloud. Only my love for you and I hope you feel the same way."

With a final sigh, Vincent rested his head against the pillow, Cloud still in his arms as he began to feel drowsy, and right before his eyes shut for the first time in a week, he watched Cloud turn over in his grasp and smile his first true smile in two years.
