They were visiting the Black-Haired Man and the Black-Haired Lady and the Little Black-Haired Girl when the Black-Haired Man said, "You know, I think it's warm enough to let the chicks out of the henhouse."
Rosie thought she'd show off. "Wiw!" she said, pointing at the Black-Haired Man. "Jak!" she said, pointing at the Black-Haired Lady. She ignored the Little Black-Haired Girl, not the least because she still found "r's" so difficult.
"Listen to you!" Jak said.
"Oh, she knows lots of words, don't you, Rosie?" Dah-ee said. She knew that one, and "Mum-mum," and that the big boy who lived with them was "Sep," and that small creature that walked on four legs was "Dog," and the fuzzier small creature that walked on four legs was "Kat."
Wiw opened a door behind the house and out came a whole bunch of fuzzy yellow balls that made peeping sounds, followed by a couple of bigger, feathery things that made kind of "cluck-cluck" noises and looked familiar. The Little Black-Haired Girl squealed and ran around and chased the balls, but Rosie was suspicious. They looked like the flowers, but flowers don't move like that and they certainly don't make noise. She wasn't sure what they were.
"Here, Rosie. You want to play with the chicks with Sarah?" Dah-ee said, bending to put her down.
Time to use another one of her newer words. "No-ooooo!"
"Alright then," Dah-ee sighed, straightening up.
Sep ran up with one of the fuzzy things in his hand. "Look, Rosie! See how soft it is?"
It didn't look soft to her. In fact, it reminded her of nettles, which she had learned hurt. But Rosie, very tentatively, put out a finger to touch the fuzz. That wasn't so bad, so she thought she'd pat harder this time.
"No, no, Rosie! Gently! Gently!" Mum-mum said.
The yellow fuzzy thing kept beeping, louder and louder. "Beep beep!" Rosie said back. Dah-ee laughed, and got Rosie all confused—what was so funny? she was only trying to be polite—but it made Dah-ee's eyes crinkle, and Rosie liked that, so she laughed, too.
The Little Black-Haired Girl was still running around chasing the yellow balls and squealing and acting in a most unseemly manner. Rosie frowned. Sure enough, the squealing turned to screams when one of the clucking creatures got mad and tried to peck her knee. Then the grown-ups were sorry! Rosie wasn't.
"I could have told you it'd all end in tears," she thought. "Stuck-up little bint. You think you're so smart! Just because you can form complete sentences already."
