A/N; First time writing R.O.D. Yes, I have read all four volumes. No, I have not watched the anime. Yes, there will be spoilers. Maybe. Now that that's covered, please enjoy!
Disclaimer; R.O.D. doesn't belong to me.
Vicious Circle
Sometimes Donnie was jealous of books.
Occasionally, the bibliophile couldn't stop the envy from coursing through his heart when he watched his prodigy student make love to books with her eyes. The interest that they shared shared an interest in her, and he didn't really want to split half and half. Donnie's heart and soul belonged to the clumsy, chipper (panting, blushing, sweating) girl, but sometimes he felt like maybe her all was in the books.
Even so, Yomiko was his to love, books or not. She could hold them, but could they hold her back? She could press them against her skin, and the heat of her flesh would warm the cover, but could they last alone in a battle against... say... hypothermia? He couldn't argue that books were, indeed, everything to a bibliophile. Books and bibliophiles were inseprable, and the love that passed between the two was insurmountable.
And still, the love of a human was vital as well.
They could do things that books could not.
They could kiss and caress Yomiko Readman. They could whisper gooey-sweet forevers in Yomiko Readman's ear, and have eyes for her and only her, as opposed to the general public. They could be loyal to her and only her.
Humans could die for her.
Pages could be ripped; flesh could be severed, but only one could so easily be taped back together and the wound would be forgotten. Only a living, breathing soul could truly die because of his love. Books could burn, but (with the rare exception) there would always be another three copies somewhere nearby.
People-lovers were fleeting.
What morbid thoughts! He laughs at himself and focuses his attention on that silly bibliophile once more. It was silly to be jealous of a book. Really it was.
"Please, Yomiko, stop eyeing it like it's an ecchi mag."
