A/N I was totally inspired by Mockingjay, so here is my first one-shot concerning the book. No worries, there will be more to come. ;) Enjoy!

"Doubt"

He looks at her face, unsure of what to think. Well, besides the obvious. She is beautiful. And not just her face, all of her, her prickly personality, her hair, the words she says…

(Except she's a mutt.)

But perhaps he can let that go. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Could it be possible that he was dreaming? But no, dreams don't stay with you for this long. And they most certainly don't hurt as much as this one does. He wouldn't dream of something so terrible and so beautiful that the sight of her cut through him like a finger through water.

But then, unbidden, the thought returns to him. The false thought that made his head spin. She loved him. She loves him. Her face conveys that. He can tell that she wishes she could've been the one to welcome back to consciousness. If those are her true thoughts, if she really loves him, was everything else false?

(Of course not. She only looks like that because she's been programmed to.)

Obvious, really. He reprimands himself. If he's this gullible, there's no telling what else he might have missed. Was that injection in the cave truly beneficial? Perhaps that was the reason he had lost the lower part of his leg. And suddenly, the synapses click in his brain. He realizes that everything is her fault. Everything that's gone wrong. He slowly pushes one leg of the bed, then the other. She was the reason he's a cripple. He shuddered slightly, but she didn't notice.

(Or maybe she did; she may have been programmed to have especially sharp eyesight.)

This makes sense to him. Of course it does. She should die for what she's done to him. A sneaky thought suggests that she was the reason the resistance was even formed. And that's another reason for her to die.

A thought smashes his perfect mind, like a rock being lobbed at a spider web. It screams to his consciousness: she's too beautiful to have done any wrong! She's too beautiful to die! He freezes, considering.

(Why do you think your family and friends are dead? It's because of her!)

He makes up his mind. He will kill her. He will fall to temptation. And it doesn't make her less beautiful, it only preserves the good that she's done. She made him feel loved for months and months. And it would have lasted for eternity, but it didn't matter because his heart would mend after a time. And everything would go back to normal.

(And he'd find another Katniss. A better one that wasn't a mutt.)

He approaches the girl, his hands outstretched. She thinks it's for an embrace. She attempts to scream when his hands surround her delicate throat, but she can't. He's cut off the air too perfectly.

His last thought before the needle enters his arm is that her frightened face didn't look right. No, it looked all wrong. Too human to be a mutation.

(But of course, that's only because her programmer was the best.)

A/N Did the thoughts make sense? Were they logical? Were they real? Were the parenthesis used in a fitting way? Those are just a few questions I'd like answered in some lovely reviews. ;) Merci! Bisous ~ the shattered star
