Elijah had been willing to help Katherine earn her freedom, just like he had helped her escape from Niklaus all those years ago, at the same time risking his brother's wrath to fall solely upon him. Niklaus had named what Elijah did betrayal, but even with the benefit of hindsight, Elijah wouldn't change his decision to spare the life of an innocent girl. On his way from New York back to Mystic Falls, Elijah was wondering about many things, the little jewel box containing the cure Katherine had gave him tucked into his breast pocket and seeming as if it weighed hundred of pounds. He had been willing to give Katherine a second chance, to let himself feel again, care for someone except of family, even come to love again the girl he had met so long ago under such unfortunate circumstances. Elijah's firmest belief right after his morality was that family is power, but he had been alone for so long that the thought of finding someone to share every aspect of his self and his life with them caused longing and a warmth that was able to ease a century-old fatigue. Family is power, but so is love and loyalty, and what while Elijah's ruined family seemed to lack those two virtues those last centuries they have been fighting one other, Katherine was a potential source for both. Elijah had fallen in love with her since day one, when she was only a scared peasant girl, a soul pure and innocent. Katherine was nothimg of these anymore and no matter what she xlaimed she didn't need him as her saviour, but she had convinced him that the kind girl he knew and loved was still there, struggling to break free from a facade of bravado, ruthlessness and arrogance. Still, somewhere inside him, Elijah wondered if his Katerina was gone and beyond changing.
