Falling Petals

Petals of magnolia fell one by one

from the gnarled tree

by the gates of the graveyard,

crowning her tombstone

with pale pink sweetness...

His face showed no sorrow;

Indeed, there was a glint in his eyes

that was almost a smile.

He watched with pity

as his son wept over her grave

clutching his own little boy.

He watched unfazed

as black clad mourners

murmured respectful words,

tossing handfuls of earth onto her casket;

they watched him with disgust

as he calmly bid her goodbye

and turned away without a second glance...

No one watched him

as he returned hours later

No one saw him as he knelt at her grave

A tall black figure

among the pale pink blooms

No one saw him

as he brushed his fingers over her name

on the marble tombstone.

'If only you waited for me,

we could have gone together,' he whispered

drawing a silver dagger

from the folds of his robes.

As he fell across her grave,

his blood seeping into the earth above her,

soft petals of magnolia

dropped quietly onto them,

as if they were wedded again in their pain.
