for the prompt: I trusted you, Ran's POV talking to Shinichi.
When he finally tells her, Ran's already guessed most of it, but she makes them both cups of tea (green, his steeped a minute longer than hers) and sits down to listen anyway.
Shinichi's voice has gone slightly hoarse by the time he finishes, a silence settling over them both, and Ran abruptly remembers thinking on more than one occasion how unusually still Conan-kun had been for a kid – he'd had a focus that even most karate learners didn't have.
Or Shinichi himself, right now. His fingers tap almost constantly on the surface of his cup as he takes another sip, obviously uneasy with the situation. But then he'd always been like that – for all the stupid and reckless stunts that Shinichi pulled, he'd always been the bravest in the face of danger.
"Are you angry?" he asks finally, then winces, probably realising how that sounded – which is just as well, since Ran isn't quite up to demonstrating how much she's learned about giving unimpressed looks from Ai-chan.
"I trusted you, Shinichi. I always have." She sets her own cup down on the table with a soft clink, and leans forward. "Did you ever trust me?"
Shinichi mirrors her pose, though he doesn't quite meet her eyes. "I do. You know I do."
"But you haven't been doing a very good job of proving it lately," Ran says in a quiet, level tone, because if nothing else she's long learned that raising your voice is a quick way to get nowhere.
And she really does believe him, whether she should or not – Sonoko would probably be yelling irately at this point, and Sera probably would've kicked him in the face twice already.
So maybe it's silly of her, but she's too tired to care – she has Shinichi back for good, finally, and that's all that matters right now.
"Go home and get some sleep, Shinichi." Ran stands and picks up both cups, and gives Shinichi her best unimpressed look when he begins to protest. "Just because you're not six anymore doesn't mean you're capable of taking care of yourself. Ai-chan tells me you haven't slept properly in days."
Shinichi grumbles audibly (she catches the words Haibara and tattletale) as he dries the cups and puts them away in the cupboard, but he does pick up his bag to leave, pausing in the doorway of the apartment. "I'm really sorry, Ran. I just wanted to keep you safe."
"We'll talk in the morning," she tells him in response, glad that she doesn't have to say this over the phone for the first time in a long time. "Good night, Shinichi."
"Night, Ran," he says with a small smile, and she wonders if he's thinking the same thing too.
