Shiki stared up at the darkening sky. It was getting late. The noise from the people in the area started to die down. The crowds followed suit. She soon noticed that she and only one other person were around the Statue of Hachiko. The brunette turned her attention towards Neku who was staring down at his feet, quiet as a mouse. She squeezed the stuffed black kitten in her arms.
"Neku," she began in a gentle voice. A barely audible sound of recognition came from the unmoving teen. Shiki continued, "I should go. My parents are bound to freak if I'm not home soon." An uncomfortable silence came after her statement. A slow nod came from Neku and he tilted his head upward to look at her. A smile was on his face. But Shiki was no fool; she could tell that it was forced. His eyes held his true feelings. He was hurt.
She couldn't take it anymore. Shiki placed Mr. Mew down on the curved edge where they sat. What happened next surprised Neku greatly. He suddenly felt two arms around his form bringing him into a warm and loving embrace. Just the feel of it broke the dam he had held back from the world. Water flowed out of his eyes, dampening Shiki's jade sweater. Of course, she didn't mind. She wanted him to let it out. It was unhealthy for him to hold in all of those emotions. He shut his eyes and wrapped his arms around her.
"Why?" He unknowingly voiced his thoughts in a pained tone. Shiki shook her head slightly.
"I don't know why. I wish I knew."
"Why isn't he here?" He sounded so broken.
He didn't come today. He didn't come yesterday. He had never showed his face after the end of the Reaper's Game. Still, Neku waited. He waited at the same spot every day after school 'til nightfall for him, hoping that one day, he would see Joshua again.
Author's Note: I am not sure if I should keep this as a one-shot or continue it. What do you think?
