Getting a Little Closer

Well, here's the lame part of your Secret Santa present, Tazzy. Next time, could you pick a song that's a little more repetitive? I kid, but sheesh, you really didn't give me a lot to go on, lyrically. Hence the embarrassing shortness of this baby. It's a triple-drabble, which means that the actual story bit is exactly 300 words long. Like I said: Lame. I wrote this pretty quickly when I didn't know if I would have access to the forum's FP account before Saturday, just so you'd have a Christmas present before Christmas. The better part of your present's on FP, but I figured there was no reason not to post this as well.

Whenever he had time to spare, Taruto liked to go and watch Purin perform in the park. He knew he should be able to put her out of his mind—she was only human, after all—but he couldn't help it. She fascinated him. He couldn't approach her. They were at war, after all, and if he tried to talk her up, she would get the wrong idea, especially after that whole kidnapping thing. She'd been weird then, too: much braver than she should have been when faced with a warrior of Taruto's skill.

Besides, attempting to romance a human was something Kish would do, and Taruto knew darn well that he was better than that loser.

He couldn't forget the taste of that candy Purin had given him. It was such a small gesture, but the mere thought of it made his stomach feel funny. She must have been a warrior no small skill herself, since she knew just what to do to destabilize Taruto's whole world. He would be sure to guard against that in the future.

But he wasn't doing a great job of guarding at the moment, because when someone tapped his shoulder, he shrieked and teleported two feet up. His face burned with embarrassment, and he hoped that it hadn't been Pai or—goodness forbid—Kish. He'd never hear the end of it if the green-haired man caught him spying on a human.

When he could bring himself to look, he saw Purin Fong standing below him, a smile on her face and juggling balls in her hands. Oh. That was so much worse.

"I saw you watching me, and I wanted to come over and say 'hi,' na no da!"

Taruto did the only thing a warrior of his skill could do in that situation: he fainted.
