Rain bounces off the windows and the roof with soft pitter-patters. Rose slides closer to the sleeping Doctor under the covers. The rain creates a cozy atmosphere in the dark room, but she is unable to sleep so instead she takes the opportunity to observe him sleep.
Rose and the Doctor have shared the same bed for several months, ever since they got back from Bad Wolf Bay. The window is illuminated from outside by a bolt of lightning followed seven seconds later by a quiet crash of thunder. She sits up and lean back against the backboard of their bed, careful not to disrupt the Doctor. Another clash of thunder and lightning makes Rose shiver. The wind and rain pick up speed, the small shower is quickly turning into a big storm. Loud thunderstorms scare her but she does her best to calm down. Now that the Doctor has finally accepted that he needs sleep, she can't risk waking him up. He looks so peaceful lying there, his chest rising and falling in an even measure. His hair is messy and his shirt is rumpled. She brushes a stray hair away from his eyes and he takes a deep breath. Rose pauses with her hand on the crown of his head. He doesn't wake up though, he just rolls over. He throws an arm over her waist and slides his hand underneath her at the small of her back. His head is now resting on her stomach and his face is half buried in her t-shirt. The breath from his mouth tickles the sensitive skin that is exposed.
A loud clap of thunder startles Rose. That one was closer and much louder than the last. Her heart speeds up and she tries to take deeper breaths. She manages to even out her breathing right as the next bolt of lightning strikes. The thunder follows almost immediately and is deafening. She jumps and brings her knees in, waking up the Doctor. It scares her and she starts shaking.
The Doctor blinks sleepily and props himself up with his hands. "What's wrong?" He looks at her face and she looks terrified. "Rose?" he sits up completely and folds her into his arms.
Loud thunder sounds again and she tenses up. He connects the dots, it's thundering. He shifts and pulls her onto his lap.
"It's only thunder." He kisses the top of her head and rests his face in her hair, smelling the flowery scent to her blonde waves. "It's just thunder, it's not going to hurt you here."
She flings her arms around his neck at the next crash and bunches up the back of his shirt in her fists. They stay that way until the storm passes and he eases her back down to her pillow. She lays on her side and faces away from him so he can spoon up behind her. He kisses the crook of her neck and then under her ear. He leans over her face and kisses her cheek, Rose closes her eyes at the touch.
"Go back to sleep, Love," he whispers in her ear.
He can feel her relax beside him, but she catches him off guard when she rolls over and presses her lips against his. It's soft and sweet and it says "I love you." Rose pulls away and snuggles closer. Her ear is pressed to his chest, over his heart, and the beating guides her back to sleep.
