Hisana loved the rain far more than Byakuya ever did, but in the years to come following her death he would sit where she had sat, sheltered by a veranda, and watch as it fell. A silver sheet, shining and shimmering off of the rocks. It had a sweet and simple song, so simple that a child could have understood it, but Byakuya couldn't even hear it.

He was too busy trying to listen for Hisana's voice in the soft, gentle rain, forgetting each time that he wouldn't hear her anymore so that he went running like a small child ran to his mother after falling and scraping his knee, except to find that his mother was gone. The comfort he expected, he couldn't find anywhere.

But Byakuya still came back, every time it rained, even though he hated the rain and he would always be alone there.

The rain fell, shining and silver and singing to him in tongues he couldn't understand. Byakuya tried to sigh but couldn't. His heart was lying too still for that.

Then, a small figure, shadowed dark, appeared in the rain, running with a faltering pace towards the shelter of the porch.

Byakuya stared, formerly still heart jumping to his throat, until, soaking wet with water dripping from her clothes, no longer silver but clear and dull, Rukia stood over him, rubbing her arms, lips quivering and blue.

"Niisama." Too polite and careful of him to leave without his say-so.

Byakuya simply nodded, and waved her off, never so much as blinking, and Rukia was out of his sight within a handful of moments.

He had tried, for one moment, and almost thought he could see her, hear her speaking to him.

Until Rukia broke the illusion, and somehow strengthened it at the same time.
