It's been an emotionally harrowing day for Cath. I can see it in her eyes after she comes out from putting Lindsey to bed.
We played with Lindsey, and watched a movie together. Focusing on her daughter has always been Catherine's way of avoiding her own feelings. She focuses on Lindsey, and everything is right with the world.
But I know her well enough now that it's just a way to mask her own feelings.

I know that some part of her has always loved Eddie. I never used to understand it, so one night, after we'd both had a little too much to drink, I asked Catherine why she loved Eddie, even after everything she'd been through with him.
"Sometimes I don't know why either," she had told me. "Maybe it's like loving something even though you know it's bad for you. Eddie had his good moments and his bad moments. So did I. We both have tempers."
"You never hurt him," I had told her.
"I can't explain it, Gil. Eddie's like coke."
I understood it then. Eddie was like an addiction.

I'm determined to get her off the addiction now. We got over coke, we'll damn well get over Eddie.
I know she's got a broken heart now, but I'll help piece it back together.
It's just the same as piecing her life back together after she got off the coke.

"How are you doing?" I ask her, as she walks into the room.
She smiles at me. "What gave me up? Candyland or The Muppet Movie?"
I put my hands on her shoulders. "Neither. It was what happened today."
Her face falls and part of me hates myself for causing it.
But then I realize it's not my fault. It's Eddie's.

I hold my arms out to her as she bursts into tears, her small body convulsing in sobs. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so used to hearing her cry like this.
It makes me want to cry along with her.

"Everything's going to be okay, Cath," I tell her, stroking her back. "I know it doesn't seem like it now, but it will be."
