Cadaver Bag
"Daddy?" Violet asks, looking up, tear-stained, heart still palpitating from the sound of the explosion. "Daddy?"
His face is unreadable. "Yes?"
"What's a hero?"
"A hero is someone who always does their best," he answers. "A hero is somebody who stops bad people from hurting others. A hero tries until the end, honey. That's what a hero is."
Violet nods, biting her lip. She helps her family gather up the pieces of Syndrome that got scattered around the yard before the police arrive. Our secret, Mom had said. Dad dug a deep, deep hole.
Good God, and maybe Syndrome's the hero after all? She finds a bloody limb and hugs it, sopping up her t-shirt with crimson red.
Honey, honey, Violet honey! Everyone won't stop screaming at her to let it go, but she's not ready to forget. They can bury her too and jump right in, 'cause maybe she's a villain.
You show 'em, babe, comes his voice, and she feels warm, which is nice because this lonely section of the hospital is so very cold.
