Twelve year old Matt Jeevas sat on his bed at the Wammy orphan home, staring at the empty bed across from him. A bed that should've been occupied by a blond-hair blue eyed boy.

It was Matt's birthday, and what gift did he get? His best friend leaving. His only friend leaving. No one else at the orphanage talked to him; it wasn't tempting to talk to an antisocial gamer. The redhead lay on his bed crying, shoving his face into his pillow. It wasn't fair. Why couldn't the family adopt them both? Was Matt's past so corrupted that no one even wanted him as a part of their family? The boy was smart. He wasn't an idiot like most orphans there. Yet, no matter who he was introduced to, no one wanted him; showed no interest whatsoever.

He was, in a way, jealous of all the other children. One fact remains, though, that he bested them in. In the three year that he'd been there, he became friends with the most stubborn, violent, melodramatic orphan that was sent to Wammy's.

Now he was gone.

He wouldn't be able to hear the crunch of the beloved chocolate bars that the hot-headed boy always ate, or the loud crack of people's noses when Matt was teased. The gorgeous blond was only a figment in his mind now, and he would probably never see him again. He would have no one. No one to protect him from bullies, and no one to stick up for him. He'd get a new roommate that would mock him endlessly. He knew how things would turn out, considering the fact that his friend's new family wasn't from around here.

Hearing the doorknob twist, he hurriedly sat up and pulled his goggles to his eyes. He never liked showing his eyes. Especially when he had been crying. He hated the color, and the fact they showed every emotion he felt.

The door swung open and he felt a body latch onto his. He fell onto his back and looked up, only to see the one who'd been clouding his thoughts 30 seconds prior.

"I just needed to see you...one more time before I go." The blond looked at him, unshed tears brimming his eyes. "Take off your goggles, Matty," he said softly. The redhead shook his head fiercely, clinging to the fabric of the blond's jacket and scarf. The boy sighed and touched Matt's face, sliding his hand up to the side of the shield protecting his eyes. "Come on, Mail…" Matt's eyes widened at the use of his real name. "Let me see your eyes one more time before I go." Slowly, he nodded, and the blond removed the goggles from the redhead's face, placing them next to the pillow beside the pair. Matt looked at his best friend through blurred, emerald eyes. He didn't even try to hide the fact he'd been crying.

Sitting up, the blond removed his scarf and the small cross necklace from around his neck. Matt sat up, and looked at him, confused.

"What are you-?" He was silenced by the accessories being put on his body.

"Keep them." Matt clutched the necklace, and fresh tears spilled from his eyes. The necklace was his friend's most precious treasure, given to him by his mother who died from a fire. He couldn't just…take it.

"N-No," Matt said shakily. "I-I can't…M-Mihael…it's yours...your mom…" His friend just smiled gently and shook his head.

"Yours now. I know you're not religious, but I want you to keep it…I want you to remember me." The ginger choked back a sob, and grabbed his goggles. Sitting on his knees, he placed them in the lap in front of him.

"Then those are yours." The blond picked them up, the lens still wet from the boy's tears. He knew Matt didn't like showing his eyes, though not why. His eyes were the most gorgeous color he'd ever seen. Personal preference, he figured.

"Matt…are you sure?" Matt just smiled softly and blushed.

"I don't want to be forgotten, either."

"You won't be." The blond leaned in and lightly kissed Matt's lips, whose cheeks turned even brighter. When he pulled away, he tucked the rosary necklace into the redhead's striped shirt."Who knows? Maybe we'll see each other again." He pulled Matt into one last hug. "I don't know when or where, but dammit, I refuse to die before I see you again. You're my best friend, and I swear on my life no one will take your place." Matt could only nod, and the blond knew his friend felt the same. Matt breathed in his soon-to-be-gone friend's scent, and clutched him tighter.

"Mello! Time to go!" someone called from downstairs. Matt's tear poured heavier, and even the older boy even let a few go. Pulling back from each other, Matt wiped the boy's tears, and clutched his chest where the necklace was at under his shirt.

"I won't lose you forever."

Mello nodded. "I'll see you again."

Grabbing the orange goggles, he clutched them tightly, and stood up. Matt stood up with him, and followed him to the door. Hugging his friend once more from behind, Matt lightly kissed his cheek.

"Don't forget your promise." He took Mello's hand, and tucked the orange goggles into the boy's coat pocket.

"I won't. I'll make it happen." Matt smiled and removed his arms.

"Go. They'll get pissed if you wait too long, I'm sure."

Mello opened the door and turned to Matt one more time before he left.

"Happy birthday, Mail."
