Elsa rarely came up with an activity for them to do. She normally let Anna choose and just went along with it. But this time while Anna and Kristoff were curled up on the couch, Anna nursing a particularly severe hangover while Kristoff threaded holly into her braids as she leant against his chest, Elsa entered their house and announced that they were going ice skating.
"Huh?" Anna asked, looking up at her sister.
"Ice skating! Come on you guys it'll be great!"
"Come on princess, the queen has spoken!" Kristoff joked, pulling Anna to her feet.
"Gee, little sister, I'd put some makeup on first" Elsa teased, earning herself a slap on her arm as Anna stalked past her to the bedroom.
An hour later they were at the ice rink. Elsa put her own white and blue skates on and flitted off, no doubt trying to show off to her sister with her spins and glides. Elsa had always loved ice skating, ever since she was a child. She would take herself off to the rink all the time for some space, while Anna preferred to attend art classes after school. Watching her sister now made her slightly regret not tagging along to lessons. She couldn't even skate a little bit, until she admitted it to Kristoff and he decided to act. Kristoff and Anna got their rentals and stepped onto the ice. The cool air was definitely refreshing for Anna, exactly what she needed to shoo away the last of this hangover. She gripped tightly to Kristoff's arm as he pulled her away from the barrier and into the centre of the ice.
"Kris! You know I'm still learning!" she cried, clutching him tighter.
"I know, and now it's time for your next lesson. It's time to let go"
"What? You mean skate on my own?!" she asked him, wide eyed and terrified. He chuckled.
"Yes, you've done so well!"
"But it's been a whole week, maybe I need to a refresher first?"
"Nah, it'll be like riding a bike. Just let go of my arm"
"Can I have your hand instead?"
"Deal" he agreed.
Anna slid her hands down his jacket sleeve and clutched at the broad hand that was already outstretched and waiting.
"Let's go" he said and together they did a loop of the rink.
"You've got it!" he grinned, placing a kiss on her forehead "Now try it without my help"
"You promise to stay right next to me?"
"Always"
Slowly Anna loosened her grip and Kristoff slid his hand from hers.
"That's it, feisty pants" he murmured, skating backwards a few inches, leaving her standing alone "one foot after the other remember. Let's do this"
Tentatively, Anna skated forwards, gaining confidence and momentum with each movement.
"I'm doing it! I'm actually doing it!" she cried, spying her sister across the ice, doing some pretty impressive spins.
"Elsa! Elsa, look!" she called out.
"Wow, Anna! You've got it!" Elsa grinned.
"Kristoff?" Anna asked, stopping herself and turning herself to look for him.
"I'm here" he assured her, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Good" she sighed with relief.
"I'm so proud of you, you're doing so well. Pretty soon you won't need me on the ice and Elsa can teach you all her tricks"
Anna shook her head and smiled.
"Not without you, you're the best teacher I could have ever had"
"Glad you think so. Now since you can skate, I need your help"
He skated over to the edge of the rink and she followed him, stopping in front of him as he put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a small garland of leaves with white berries.
"I don't know what to do with this holly I found near the skate rental" he grinned and winked at her.
"Shut up" she laughed, grabbing his jacket and pulling him into a deep kiss.
