CHAPTER 1 – Him

Jayne had admired River from afar ever since he had first seen her fight. Elegant. Graceful. Beautiful. At first he thought he was just watching her because he was amazed at how they could approach the same situation in two completely different ways and have the same end result.
In the last few weeks though, he had realised that he watched her because he liked to. When he saw her do anything, whether it was fighting, dancing or piloting, it clean took his breath away. And it didn't come easy for him to admit, even only to himself, that the moon-brain had made herself quite snug in a soft spot in his heart that he, quite frankly didn't know he even had.
He tried to be stealthy in is watching ways (something that usually came naturally to him) but he just knew that sometimes he let his gaze linger just that tiny bit too long and she had noticed, but she had never said anything to him about it. Hell, he didn't have to let his gaze linger, he knew that all she had to do was read his mind and she'd know everything. The joys of fancying a reader. There would never be any problems with trying to tell her if something was wrong, all she'd have to do was know he was in the room and then pluck the thought out of his brain.
All Jayne hoped for was that neither Mal nor Simon found out, otherwise he would be in for a world of hurt, not that he was afraid of the doc, so to speak, but he could throw a cocktail of drugs in his bloodstream and turn Jayne into a vegetable. Then River would be the more sane of the two. That was an interesting thought...
A/N: okay so I know this isnt the best thing ever, and it's only my third ever fanfiction, but I appreciate any criticism that you guys have to give, that way I can make my stories better for you crew to read XD This is the first fanfiction I have ever planned to actually have chapters, so if you guys like it, I will certainly endeavour to deliver the next installment to you ASAP :)
