Author's Note: I am basing this on Akira Ishida's wonderful voice of Hakkai, because I think I prefer it and also because I absolutely adore Akira Ishida swoon However, I suppose one could make a case for a dub-version of it too- shrugs whatever you like!
Author's Note 2: This is my first foray into fanfic/drabble-land and I hope it is received well. I have officially crossed the line...yikes!
When Cho Hakkai says your name, he's not really saying your name at all. Hakkai's words are always chosen carefully, with the most deliberate pronunciation- there's no accident in anything he says. For a man with so many smiles at his disposal, it's really his voice that can reveal the most about him.
Most of the time, I really have no idea what's going on in his mind, and I have a feeling that even Sanzo can't tell. But the minute my friend opens his mouth and says my name, I can guess well enough what he's thinking, or enough to avoid getting an evil, non-monocled eye cast my way.
It's the names that I find easiest to decode, like having a Hakkai-translator. For example: When he says "Go---jyo" with his voice accenting the end of my name and sortof pausing on it, usually with a tilt of his head and his usual smile- this means: "I have a job for you to do, but I'd like you to figure out what it is and help me with it, and in the end you'll realize that it was best for you to do it quickly and without complaint, and if you do complain then I'll just have to smile some more and then break one of your
appendages. Thank you very much and I do hope you are having a good day".
And when he says "San-zo", accenting the end like with mine, but accompanied by a slightly more evil-looking smile and usually in the form of a question, it means: "Now, Sanzo, you are being irrational, but you are Sanzo and that is to be expected. But I really do feel it's best that you do as I suggest and in the end, I'm sure you'll see that it was the best course of action to take. And if you don't do as I suggest, you really can't blame me for the consequences, so I do hope you'll take my advice without complaint and if so, I will not have to resort to any physical harm, which you do know I'm capable of. Thank you so very much".
Usually when he says "Sanzo!" quickly, and without a smile, it means that we're in danger. This is accompanied by a chi barrier or blast that alleviates whatever danger we were in and replaces the smile on his face. This is the same as when he says "Goku!" or "Gojyo!" in the same manner.
When he breaks up the "Go-" and the "-ku", in sort of a "Goooooo-kuuu", you know that he's chastising the boy for something. But the way he says it is never mean, always gentle. He's saying: "Now, Goku, I know that you feel what you did was not wrong or childish, but it has upset Sanzo and I know that you do not want to upset Sanzo. So you need to simply sit back and take my advice, and everything will be alright. We will learn from this situation and you need not feel bad about it, just see that it doesn't happen in the future, or I may have to resort to a more disciplinary type of action and neither you nor I want that, ok?"
One of the ones that I secretly like to hear is the breathy way he says "Gojyo?" sometimes, quickly, but in a surprised tone. This one usually wipes the smile off of his face, if only for a moment, and says: "Gojyo, I'm surprised/shocked/worried at your behavior, and I would ask that you explain yourself in a timely manner so that we can resolve the situation to my satisfaction".
But my all-time favorite, hands down is the following: breathy, a bit surprised "Go-jyo!", followed by a drawn-out "Gooooo-jyo" and then simply "Gojyo! Gojyo! Gojyo! Gojyo! Gojyo...Gojyo!"
