We were both young, when I first saw you...

They were seven when they first met.

Their parents had dragged them to a charity ball, something about supporting underprivileged wizard children. The giant ballroom seemed to him a real life imitation of a gaudy snowglobe; it was golden orb of a room. Softly glowing candles in golden holders were floating wistfully near the ceiling, bouquets of warm yellow flowers adorned the room, strings of shining ribbon hung from the walls alongside rich tapestries depicting famous scenes from wizard lore. A girl might have felt like a fairy princess, but to Sirius Black, the whole thing seemed ridiculous. After being introduced to the hosts and muttering a stiff, "On behalf of the Noble House of Black, I thank you for the invitation," Sirius made his escape as quickly as he could.

After raiding the refreshments table, he retreated out through the glass double doors that led to an elegant, fantastical garden. He found himself standing on a veranda that overlooked a long, rectangular pond surrounded on both sides by willow trees, their delicate branches draped with wispy leaves that dipped softly into the water.

Taking a bite of his stolen scone and looking out into the night, he took a deep breath and tasted the soft summer air. Setting off down the stairs and making his way into an alcove hidden in the shadow the stone railing, he settled in for a long night of waiting out the party. He intended to finish his pastry in peace before exploring the grounds for a few hours, returning only when he was positive his parents had ingested sufficient alcohol to warrant a suggestion about going home. His plans, however, were interrupted when he turned the corner to be met with the suspicious gaze of a wide pair of brown eyes of a girl his age. The girl to whom they belonged visibly relaxed when she saw it was just him and not a vengeful parent, and she raised a scone of her own to her mouth before taking a bite and observing him. "That suit looks awfully uncomfortable."

At a loss for words and momentarily caught off guard by her bluntness, Sirius looked stupidly down at his starched white shirt and uncomfortably stiff suit jacket that had been paired with an emerald green tie he was sure had been intended to strangle him. "Uh…" Was all he managed to say before she continued.

"My names Marlene McKinnon."

Looking back up at her inquisitively, Sirius cocked his head to the side and leaned against the marble corner of the alcove she was taking refuge in. "Sirius Black." He pushed off the wall with his shoulder and sat down next to her. She had long brown hair and he thought the way it curled around her face was pretty. "Looks like it's going to be a long night, huh." Marlene nodded her agreement, fiddling with the scone in her hands and smiling grimly.

They spent the rest of the evening together, the two of them laughing, cracking jokes and getting into fights over the most mundane things. He liked the way she challenged everything he said and she liked the way he seemed taken aback every time she said something deemed unladylike for girls her age. At the sound of Cygnus Black's sharp voice calling his name and telling him it was time to go home, Sirius bade his new friend goodbye and ran back into the main ballroom, rejoining his family and thinking that maybe the night hadn't turned out so bad after all.
