His Son….His Hero

By Jenna Kaczorowski

The sound of white boots clanking against metal was not unfamiliar to him, especially against the cold metal of the death star battle station's grounds….but this time, it was different. They approached at a quick speed, firing red shining lasers at his opponent, who deflected them easily, sending them back at the troopers who died quickly as they burned through their reflective white armor. He noticed that as his opponent did this, he could have easily attacked his left side, so easily wipe him out….and he tried for it. Obviously his opponent wasn't about to fight WITH him, so he would have to fight AGAINST him. He swung his lightsaber at the left side, but the opponent must have sensed it, because he blocked the attack.

"Join me, Luke….together we can rule the universe, father and son…just like we were meant to," he said. The blonde boy, his opponent, shook his head.

"No, father…but you and I are mean to be together," Luke said. He paused his motions sharply. A quiet and unknowing silence fell over father and son. At that moment he felt the love from his song strongly.

"You don't ned the Empire, father…please!" Luke's words echoed in his mind. He turned to see his evil master looking down on him.

"How pathedic. I will just have to handle this job myself, Vader," his master admitted. Suddenly blue lightning shot out from his masters' fingers, hitting his boy….his son…at a devastating rate. Luke looked up at his father with bloodshot eyes in pain, but all he did was stand there.

'What have I done?' Vader thought to himself in agony. 'My son…he's doing the right thing…why can't I?' Suddenly he flew at his master, lifting him into the air. He could feel the electricity shock him, hurt him, cute into his body that had to be repaied after he turned evil, but he did not stop. He threw him down a hatch that went down to the Death Star's main power, and the station began to shake. He collapsed on the floor, breathing in heavy gasps. Luke rushed over to him, helping him to stand up.

"Father…" Luke said, almost in admiration. Luke smiled and Vader did too…through the mask of his old self. Luke began to help him back up, and they walked through the dark hallways of the death star.

"What made you change your mind?" Luke asked him, one of his Dad's arms slung around his shoulder. Vader smiled.

"Seeing you fight evil…reminded me…of when I….was your age…," he said in between heavy gasps for air. "I….fought evil too….it was when I was…truly happy…and…I knew that was the…person…I should be." Luke looked at him and nodded. Finally, after walking for a little bit, they arrived at Luke's X-wing….his flying ship. Luke set his father down carefully. Suddenly he began to take off his helmet and mask of his past.

"No, you'll die!" Luke shouted. Vader merely smiled and shook his head.

"This is as…far as I…can go…and it is…the old me…holding me…here…" he admitted. He took off his mask slowly to reveal himself. His skin was still healing from his horrible fight, and Luke stared at it.

"My son…good…luck," was all that he could say. He wanted to say that he had his mother's eyes, wanted to say that he had his father's chin, wanted to compliment him on how much he had learned in the force…even more than he himself had learned at Luke's age…but slowly the world began to fade. He saw tears come into Luke's eyes, but he couldn't do anything about it. His eyes began to close, and he felt himself die, felt himself leave his body. His son watched him go sadly, and he was so proud of him….his own son saved him. His own son…was a hero.
