Title: Missing Nin-Dog
Fandom/characters: Naruto/Itachi, Kiba, Akamaru
Rating: PG
Warnings/notes: ItachiAkamaru though perfectly worksafe, kthx. Weird writing style.

Akamaru ran away. Kiba was hysterical. Not even Hinata could calm him.

They looked for him. No results.

Akamaru was labeled the first missing nin-dog Konoha had ever seen.

-

Akamaru was hungry after days of aimless traveling. He could hunt but he wound up running across someone who gave him food before he found any prey. The man who fed him had a weird looking friend that smelled funny. He didn't like it.

Though he liked one of them.

-

Itachi didn't want this thing following them. He didn't stop it.

Kisame kept asking if he could eat it. He was shut up every time with a glare from his companion.

-

Kiba grieved. His best friend was gone.

-

Akamaru was now allowed to cuddle up near their camp at night. It was getting cold. He could curl up near the leg of his new owner of sorts without being stopped after the fire died out. The man slept sitting up and Akamaru could only press his wet nose to the humans hand in thanks.

-

Itachi found himself looking over his shoulder to check if it still followed him more and more. Whenever Kisame wasn't around because the missions of the Akatsuki sent them down different paths he would carry it in his arms. It was the first affectionate form of contact he'd had in a while.

The last time he'd been carrying an injured Sasuke on his back.

-

Kiba slowly recovered. He was still unstable. Losing Akamaru had done a lot to him. He would be okay though.

-

Akamaru was free to lick and curl up and follow as close as he pleased. The two years he'd spent with Kiba as a pup were lost among the memories of his new master.

-

Itachi did what he could to keep it with him. He didn't need to spare the glances over his shoulder anymore. It was always in his view.

Kisame didn't bother nagging Itachi about it anymore. He'd grown used to it.

-

Somehow, things turned out okay in the end.
