"B'Elanna, look at me," Tom urged.

"I can't, I just can't."

"Yes you can. Come on, tell me what's wrong."

"I can't, it hurts too much."

"B'Elanna, I just proposed, throw me a line here," Tom whispered.

"There's no way you want to marry me."

"I do, I really do."

"NO YOU DON'T," she screamed.

"What are you-" but before he was done, she ran out of the room. He watched her go, and tears began to stream down his face.

B'Elanna wasn't sure why she had run. She guessed it was because she was afraid. The last man she had loved had left her. And the one before that, and the one before that. All the way back to her father. She wouldn't take that risk again. All she needed was herself, she said in her head for the millionth time. 'Who are you trying to kid, you need him, too' said an annoying little voice in her head. she told it to shut up, but she knew it was right.

That night Tom tossed and turned in bed, trying to sleep. Finally he gave up and went to the replicator for some water. He still couldn't figure it out. Then it hit him. She was a afraid. Afraid because every man she'd ever been with had left her. She'd been hurt too many times. He felt pity for just a second. Then he felt anger that she didn't trust him. Well, he'd straighten her out. With an expression full of fury, he threw on his robe and marched out the door.

When he got to her door he chimed insistently. Nothing happened, so he chimed again. The door whooshed open. He could tell she hadn't slept either.

"Tom this isn't-"

"Too bad." The shortness in his voice caught her off guard. "You're going to listen to me." He stormed inside. She opened her mouth but he started talking before she could. "You're afraid! You think I'll leave. You don't trust me! Well, know what? I'm not going anywhere. I love you, damn it! And I want to MARRY you! I won't leave for anything in the world!"

"Tom I can't-"

"I don't think you heard me. I LOVE you. I want to MARRY you. I WON'T go!"

B'Elanna was shocked. No one had ever fought so hard to be with her. "Really?"

"Yes, damn it!" She could see the love in his eyes.

"Okay, lets do it."

"Really?" It was Tom's turn to be shocked.

"Yes, damn it! Now kiss me."

"I can do that." And he did. That night, Tom's bed remained unused, while B'Elanna nearly wore out the springs in her mattress.
