"Ruby, why do you hate me?" Sapphire had asked these very words to her love long ago, before there was any Steven and before there was any rebellion to speak of.
Instead, these two gems had been forcefully stuck together thanks to Ruby running into much bigger gems and them deciding that these two needed a lesson taught.
However, they managed to escape thanks to Sapphire finding a way out of the situation, which so happened to be running away into a cave.
Ruby stared at the blue gem that was then sitting in the corner of the cavern.
"Why do I hate you?" she declared this question as if she was wanting to ask this for the longest time.
"Well, for starters, you're cold, blunt, you think that you're above it all, which you're not, stuck up, spoiled and you act like you have no emotions! Anything else?"
Sapphire looked down at the floor, silent for a moment, then asked "Is that the real reason why you hate me?"
The red gem stared at Sapphire, her two, angry red eyes stared into the single eye covered by light blue bangs.
"What other reason is there?! You're the one who decided that I wasn't strong enough for those gems back there! It's because of you that I had to run away from the one chance to prove myself!"
Ruby turned away and stormed back and forth throughout the cave.
For a while, the only sound was the stomping of crimson feet colliding with the rough brown dirt below.
Then, Sapphire broke the silence with three words: "Thank you, Ruby."
The pacing stopped. "Huh? What for?"
"For feeling the way you are."
The fighter, understandably confused, tilted her head.
"What I'm saying is that you hate me because of who I am, not because of what I'm able to do or because of my abilities."
Ruby scoffed. "So what if you can freeze stuff? All sapphires can do that. Big deal."
The blue singer shook her head.
"That's not what I was talking about. What I was talking about was my sight."
She stood up.
"Do you know why the Diamond Authority needs me, even though I'm defective?" she asked.
"It's because of my Future Vision. I have the ability to see various options that time can take. Think of it as if time was a map and I am able to steer the ship."
At this point, Ruby was more confused that angry, so Sapphire continued.
"The reason why we ran away is because I didn't see any futures that we would survive by fighting."
"But what does that have to do with hating you?" Ruby asked.
"Well…" Sapphire took time to put together how she would say this next part.
"It's because the reason everyone normally hates me is because of my visions. They think that I'll say something horrible and that I'm…."
Sapphire paused before saying "I'm cursed" to Ruby, who was now sitting before the blue gem.
As a long silence was woven between the two future lovers, it was then broken by the red fighter.
"Well, it's pretty late, I guess we should camp out in this cave tonight."
Her angry tone of voice was replaced by a more calm and understanding tone, now that she had thought things over.
Sapphire checked to see if there was going to be any danger, then she nodded in approval.
As the two gems laid down for the night, the blue seer turned to Ruby.
"I like the way you hate me because of who I am, not because of what I can do.
It shows that you see me as a person first and not as an object."
And as Sapphire rolled over to sleep, Ruby stared at the ceiling of the cave, repeating those two sentences over and over in her mind.
