A missing scene from Virus
John pulled the covers up to his face and tried to sleep. His roommate Dr. Brackett had longed seen the back of his eyelids but the paramedic couldn't. Even with the door shut to his hospital room he knew behind the door, lives were being saved, all for one. Although unconscious when Tim Duntley died, when he was coherent enough he could see the pain etched on Roy's face and knew it was a fallen comrade.
The door opened to see Roy DeSoto dressed in his dress uniform, Tim Duntley's funeral had been today. Gage had been too weak to attend even though he had wanted too.
"Hey Johnny," Roy whispered seeing his roommate was asleep.
"Hey Roy," Gage whispered back and looked at his partner. "I shoulda been there," the paramedic protested. Knowing he and Duntley suffered from the same flu bug made it worse, the paramedic had survived whereas Tim had died.
"It wouldn't have matter Johnny, everyone was there, and everyone knew why you weren't there. Hell, you can even go to the latrine by yourself." Roy offered and then sat on the bed.
"I know it's just, even Tim had held out a little longer…he woulda been alive instead of dead," John played with the sheet. "Just a little longer you know." Trying to focus his mind on how he was alive and well and another firefighter was dead.
"Well," Roy looked at Brackett, "you know how it is."
"Man, doesn't mean I have to like it. If Jenny coulda remembered sooner." John wiped at his eyes. "Tim was a good man Roy. He didn't deserve to die because of a stupid monkey. Mattie deserved to have her husband alive, you know."
"Johnny, you can't go there, you know that. I mean look at all the people that have been saved, Duntley saved. Just don't." Roy sighed and played with the buttons on his jacket.
"I know Roy. Rule number one right?" Johnny gave a crooked smile trying to get himself out of his funk.
"Yeah, Junior rule number one. Anyway, it's getting late. I'll see you later, okay. You gonna be okay?" Roy stood up concerned about the sadness his partner faced alone.
"Yeah, I'll be okay. Give your wife and kids a big hug for me, k. Cause we all have a lot to be thankful for," Gage yawned and waved as his partner left.
Turned to his side, the dark haired paramedic didn't know his roommate had heard everything as silent tears fell from Kell's eyes.
