Hey, everybody! Happy Thanksgiving! I know it's been a while since I published anything, and I thought the best way to show how thankful I am for all you readers is to write a new fanfiction, just for you. Love you all!
Disclaimer: I do not own FMA, although if Arakawa-sensei wanted to give it to me for Christmas, I wouldn't object...? No? Oh well.
No pairing. Well... Ed/Roy if you squint, I suppose. :)
A Day For Family
Ed sighed, his breath fogging the window he was leaning on as he watched the snow fall, thick and white. Ever since… that day… he had a hard time on days like this, when he should be surrounded by family and friends, happy and content. This year, though, that was impossible. He and his brother had no time for frivolous things like holidays and celebration; they still had to find the Stone. If it wasn't for the blizzard outside, they would already be on a train, following the latest lead Mustang had given them on someone in Xing that might be able to help them decode some new research on alkahestry. He was restless as usual, knowing that there was information out there that could be the key to getting their bodies back and he was stuck in the apartment being useless.
He was startled by a sudden banging at the door. On guard immediately, he stood and moved towards the sound.
"Who is it, Brother?" He turned to see Alphonse watching him, a curious glint in his glowing eyes. Ed shrugged.
"I dunno, Al." He threw open the door and was shocked to see Maes Hughes and Mustang standing there arguing, Hawkeye behind them, exasperated. "Um… what are you doing here?" The older men ceased their bickering and turned towards him.
"Hey, Ed! Al!" Maes cried enthusiastically, shaking Ed's hand vigorously. "So I was just telling Roy here that we just had to come get you. You don't have any holiday plans, do you?" Ed rubbed his arm, sore from the exuberant handshake, and shook his head slowly. Maes ruffled his hair, and he was taken aback at the warmth in the gesture, mirrored in the expressions on his superiors' faces.
"Why don't you and Alphonse join us for dinner?" Riza said gently. "Hughes is kidnapping us all and dragging us to his house, and you know the saying: leave no man behind." Turning to the colonel, she smiled, and added, "Besides, Colonel Mustang was adamant that we not leave you here to… what were your words again, sir? Mope about?" Ed could swear he saw a blush cross the older man's face, and he found himself swallowing past a lump in his throat.
"I… um…" He cleared his throat. "I don't.."
"Don't say anything," Roy suggested, with a smile that made Ed's face warm. "Come on, Fullmetal. Join us."
Before he could say anything, he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder, and he looked up at Alphonse. "Come on, Brother. Let's go. After all, the holidays are a time for family, right?" He blinked back tears and nodded, smiling widely.
"Alright," he said to them, grabbing his red coat off a chair next to the door. "Let's go." The others went ahead while he turned to lock the door. When he turned back to the hall, he looked up to see Roy watching at him with a warm smile on his face. He found himself choked up again, and when Roy opened his arms invitingly, he embraced the older man tightly, smiling against his chest as the colonel put his arms around his shoulder and pressed his face into his hair. "Thanks, Roy," he mumbled, his voice muffled by the fabric.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Edward."
