Sometimes Rico looked so sweet while sleeping that Kowalski could forget the troubles his beloved had undergone, the horrors that left their permanent marks on his feathers and heart. Then Rico would shift again as his dream changed. His beak opened in a cry sometimes audible, often silent. His scar twitched.
Kowalski's heart was pained as, every time, he watched Rico's fragile innocence shatter until he hopped in his bunk with him and wrapped his flippers protectively around him. As he held him, Rico's innocence returned, and Kowalski held him again through another night of unforgotten horror turned loving peace.
