Kowalski had been holed up in his laboratory for hours on end when his doors suddenly sprang open. He glanced up, saw his lover standing before him, and immediately returned his attention to his work. He'd been studying this anomaly every spare chance he'd gotten over the last few days despite Rico's determined attempts to pry him away.

Rico stomped his talons and pouted, but Kowalski didn't look up. Rico let out a string of loud and obscene squawks, but the only response he received from Kowalski was distracted muttering. "That's nice, Rico. I love you, too!"

Rico growled, his dark eyes flashing. He knew Kowalski loved him, but he hated being ignored! He'd had all he could stomach of it these last several days, and he was done playing second base to science, which, in truth, he'd never had much use for any way. He screeched, flipped through the air, and started spitting dynamite at the opposite wall.

"RICO!" Kowalski yelled, rushing to stop him, but Rico just flipped around his lover's frantically waving flippers and kept vomiting explosions. He flipped back and forth through the lab while he did his damage before at last coming to a stop beside his mate. His chest and stomach heaved, but he smiled proudly at his handiwork nonetheless.

Kowalski stared at the crumpled, smoking wall with his mouth wide open but no sound escaping. "Rico . . . " he breathed in awe, and then tears started welling up in his eyes. He turned to his love with sorrow written on his black and white face, and as the gigantic heart smoked behind him, he sobbed openly.

"I'm sorry!" he wailed, clutching Rico tightly in his flippers. "I'm so sorry! I should have seen it before! Love isn't complicated, or at least, it doesn't have to be! It's wonderful! It's majestic! It's the greatest power on Earth! What matters is that you love me and I love you!" He wept openly in his flippers as Rico stroked his back. "I'm sorry I've been ignoring you lately!"

"'s okay," Rico assured, sending a hate-filled glare at his lover's experiments that he'd gone through in his attempts to explain love. "Just kiss me," he mumbled, "and I forgive you." He dipped him then, touched his beak with his, and kissed him deep and long all through the night and into their next day to come shining brightly.

The End
